I want to have a serious discussion and enlighten people on the subject. "Whats the difference between Anime and Cartoon" Are they the same? Or are they different?

It's the style of art. Example: Avatar is considered an anime and it's American(Though the art production is produce in a Japanese Studio) But it is voice and push out by american. The style ORIGINATED in Japan, but that doesn't mean Japan is the only place that is allowed to produce anime. Secondly if a cartoon only comes from America and anime only from Japan. then what about the rest of the world? Or is Japan and America the only two places left?

All of them are cartoons. Cartoon by definition is a motion picture using animation techniques to photograph a sequence of drawings rather than real people or objects. anime is a cartoon, but not all cartoons are anime. Anime SHOULD encompass all, since its directly taken from the term "animation" however it's NOT because the term referring to Japanese styled cartoons was JAPanime or Japanese Animation. This was considered racist and the JAP was dropped from the term, giving us what we know today as just "anime"

To me, Anime is a style of animation that originated in Japan, but can be used by anyone. It isn't the same as cartoons though.

I think when people think of cartoons they think of these little kid shows such as Dexter's Laboratory. Shows such as this normally don't have any real direction and are meant solely for entertainment. Japanese animation is seen as something for an older audience with all of the open sex references and excess violence. What im trying to say is that cartoons are normally depicted to stay the same while anime is most of the time supposed to portray growth or tell a changing story that isn't resolved immediately. When cartoons such as Avatar: The Last Airbender, Teen Titans, and Generator Rex came into the scene having the qualities that people loved from japanese animation but not originating in Japan, no one kne how to respond. This is where the shift began between cartoon and anime. The only things sepearating japanese animation and cartoons in general(not only Western) is the style of animation and the target audience. if you ask me they are all the same damn thing.

Nostalgia
Anyway cartoons aren't really like anime. Cartoons are usually for kids while anime are usually for older people. I mean we have things like Naruto where as they have blood, cursing, action, death, etc. Whilst cartoons have: Some type of comedy.
Cartoons= Not as serious
Anime= Serious
A serious anime we all know of is you guessed it! DBZ. Kai on Nickelodeon cut out SOOO much.
There are rarely any cartoons that are as good as anime. I mean Teen Titans was good, but now with Teen Titans GO!..... (ﺧ益ﺨ)
Teen Titans: Action all the time, serious moments, etc
Teen Titans GO!: Comedy
Apparently all we have now for cartoons is comedy. Back in the good old days we had action & comedy and it was epic af.

From a technical point of view they are the same as they are both animation. But western cartoons tend to be aimed more at children with few exceptions such as south park and family guy which is aimed at teenagers and young adults.

Anime on the other hand has more depth to it as it has a much broader genre with programs geared toward all ages. But the ones released in western company still are aimmed toward young adults and children as adult over here tend to ignore animation of all forms based on opinions they have made on western animation.

Another variation between the two is the Anime most of the time if not all the time is just a animated show about the manga. While western comic do get turned into cartoons they don't really tend to follow the actual plot of the comic, and really just have the characters and a vague idea of what is going to happen. They are more like alternate tellings of the comics rather then a retelling.

see the classification is complicated if you say its the art style then does that mean some anime aren't anime

for example PSG doesn't tend to stick to traditional art styles and can look a bit like western cartoons

and would jackie chan be considered since it shares some qualities

I do consider avatar to be ameri-anime

and if your talking about plot well "cartoons" according to the west can stick to the plot and anime can go all other the place

An Anime is a Cartoon.

Anime is a animated show that is based off a manga of some sort right?
Cartoon is an animated show.

I am guessing it's just a branch of it.

There both animated tv shows that are usually ficition.

I never watched Anime besides DBZ because they i dont seem interested in it and always that it was gay. IN MY OPINION.

Cartoons all have a age genre. For example

Dora the explorer - 2-5
Spongebob - 6 - 10
Anime - 11-16
South Park - 16 & up
Something like that.

Makes sense to me.

I never really cared much for Anime cause no one ever comes up with A NEW DAMN PLOT! All of it seems the same, some dickwad gets involved in something that's none of his/her business, goes on some type of bullshit adventure, gets some shitty lookin transformations or some weapon and they magically take out some type of army or something.

I CALL BULLSHIT!

I don't even consider Anime as Anime anymore. They're all cartoons to me. You show me a decent anime that I ain't seen already where the villain fucks up everything and I'll show you a god damn cartoon!

Anime = Tells a shitty story.
Cartoon = Pure entertainment that usually turns into an Anime

Random Thought: You're going to look me in the eye and tell me that a functionally brain dead turtle goof are better than a god damn dragon?
