I think it would be nice to make radio contact with something within 50 light years or so. I'm firmly of the opinion that anything that could travel to our solar system in a reasonable amount of time (i.e. faster than light) would have to be so utterly advanced it would make us seem like cavemen, or even insects, considering doing so involves one-upping the laws of physics. There are currently hypothetical models for high relativistic travel that involve using the Hawking radiation generated by miniature, artificial black holes or antimatter as sources of fuel. Something that could use, a wormhole or hyperspace to travel from point A to point B would seem akin to something like Galactus or a Lovecraftian elder god. Quite frankly, I wouldn't anything vaguely resembling either within several light years of Earth.

I hate to break it to you, but if aliens look like anything, it's not going to be blue-skinned humanoids. I mean, just look at the biodiversity on Earth. It's possible that they could have similar characteristics, like a bipedal form, but it's doubtful they'd look anything like us. If you want a more realistic depiction of aliens from the media to go by, I think Xenomorphs are about what one could expect.

well i am going to use a quote from boondocks saying that we can't tell alien appearances because it could be anything it is a unknown unknown it not a known unknown

Fact, not opinion. Anything that can reach our planet in a reasonable amount of time, even if they didn't manage to break the universal speed limit, would have to be so much more advanced than us their common children's toys could put an end to our civilization.

But you can make an educated guess. There's a field of research known as exobiology where people try to find out about the extreme and oddities of life on Earth to project what it might be on other planets. Pretty much any biologist worth their paycheck will tell you that if aliens exist, (which most of the scientific community agrees upon in some capacity) they will almost certainly be nothing like us.

I'd think the government would be just as much in the dark about it as us. Conspiracy theories are generally bullshit built on bullshit anyway.

I'm talking about more about basic intelligence more than anything -- as in, individuals would be so much more intelligent than us that we'd seem like animals. Level of technology may or may not be indicative of individuals, but I think that's probably what we can expect, unless we're talking about aliens with a particular caste system or hive mentality.

Personally I'm of the opinion of if there is alien life it is not more then a few thousand years ahead of us and hell it might even be behind us. This is assuming there is no existing life from before the big bang, and life started more or less the same time everywhere due to this.

But like I said this is just my opinion.
