Revival in anime works in one of two ways:
1) To revive one of the main "good guy" characters. This method will only be used after a ton of more suitable subjects will have already died. Usually used to bring back a popular character who just sucks so much that the writer wants to kill him off again. This method will invariably cost a life in order to be performed, thus leaving the newly revived hero and their companions in mourning (even if the one performing it was someone who had just been trying to kill them 6 chapters ago).
2) To bring the "big bad" back. This method is usually used towards the end of the series just when the heroes think they have won. Usually used to bring back the main antagonists' group
actual leader. This method will usually cost the lives of the remaining antagonists in order to be performed, however the big bad outclasses the entire group to such a degree that he can usually stomp the heroes until they gain some "unforeseen and mysterious power" to defeat him (usually involving the power of their emotions or hope).
