Hands down, this is the best movie so far this year. I'd give it a solid 3 1/2 stars. It's not as good as The Dark Knight, Spider-man 2, or Iron Man. So, maybe the fourth best superhero movie I've seen? I'd say that's about right.

The humor was good, the filming style was solid, the shaky cam didn't go overboard, there wasn't too much teal and orange, the characters were very well done, (except Hawkeye, who didn't get enough screen time, but there were 6 other major characters) and the plot was enough to move it along. Once again, Robert Downy Jr. did a stunning performance as Iron Man, Tom Hiddleston was a fine Loki, and most of the cast did a fine job acting. Probably the only performance I didn't really like was Chris Hemsworth as Thor, and that was partially because I felt he was trying too hard to do his voice.

The only downside was the plot, which I thought was a little... strange. I was expecting something adapted directly, or nearly directly, from a comic book story arc. If this is one, I don't recognize it. The aliens just came from nowhere. They're not a well-known species, like, say, the Skrull or Kree, both of whom could have easily been used. (I'd personally go with the Kree, in case a Fantastic Four reboot involves the Skrull somewhere down the line.) The Tesseract/Cosmic Cube/AllSpark/whatever is a stereotypical MacGuffin of great power without a purpose. Part of me hopes the reasoning behind all of this will be explained in an inevitable sequel.

And speaking of sequels, judging by the teaser at the end of the film, we're getting one, and it's going to involve Thanos. I'm going to take a guess and say we're getting an adaptation of the first Thanos War, but if they decide to take a shot at The Infinity Gauntlet, I'd love it, considering the only adaptations of it we've had thus far have been in the Super Hero Squad stuff, which is... loose to say the least.

The Infinity Gauntlet would be difficult to adapt to film because of the sheer number of characters, but I suppose it would make the most sense to make it an Avengers film as opposed to something else. You'd have to swap out a number of character roles among other things to make it fit with a smaller cast. While on the subject, I'd love to see Death and Eternity involved in a film, since Thanos's love for Death is a major driving point of his character... But keep the third in their trinity, Galactus, out of this mess. Live-action film has had their shot with him in Rise of the Silver Surfer, and I don't want a repeat of that disaster. But at the end of the day, it'd probably be too complicated, and Thanos War would make more sense from a plot perspective... I still want a direct-to-DVD animated Infinity Gauntlet adaptation at some point, though.

This movie was as good a super hero movie as you will ever see. So much could have gone wrong putting together such larger than life heroes. The only performance which dragged the movie down was Scarlett Johanson. It was like they were forcing everything with her character, to somehow compensate for her inability to be "super".

This was by far better than Iron Man and Spiderman 2.

The guy at the end, the red skrull, i forgot his name but i know who he is. He's the guy who had the infinity gauntlet. Id love to see him in an Avenger's sequel, if there is one.

Oh yea, thanos. thats his name.

Out of my favorite movies, this has got to be in the top 5, the first being any Indiana Jones movie.

The guy at the end, the red skrull

For the record, there weren't any Skrulls in this movie. Heck, I'm not even sure what race they were. I remember one of the people in charge of making the film saying that they didn't want to include Skrulls (and probably Kree as well) since they're important enough to deserve a fair bit of explanation and screen time, and they already had enough big name characters to spread that screen time out to. I can understand that myself, and personally, I think Skrulls probably belong most with the superhero team they were introduced with -- the Fantastic Four.

From what I understand, Fox will, inevitably, have to make a reboot. Otherwise, they'll lose the rights to actually make a film about the series. I believe they've already announced the planning for such a film. Skrulls would logically be a good go-to choice for a villain, especially if they include Super Skrull in particular. But that would be best left for a sequel. They should do a respectable representation of the best-known villain first -- Doctor Doom. If they were to do a trilogy, Skrulls would probably be next on the list.

Oh, and for the record, Thanos isn't a Skrull, despite having a similar wrinkled chin. He's a mutant Titan. (Titans coming from the moon Titan, which orbits Saturn. Some scientists speculate that the conditions there are similar to a primordial Earth, making it an prospective breeding ground for primitive forms of life, albeit not advanced civilizations like we have in the Marvel Universe.)

i forgot his name but i know who he is. He's the guy who had the infinity gauntlet. Id love to see him in an Avenger's sequel, if there is one.

From what I understand, it's planned to be a trilogy. Which just begs the question, what the heck could you do after an adaptation of Thanos War/The Infinity Gauntlet? What could possibly result in a more impressive crossover with a more threatening villain? (Well, without using a cosmic entity or their kin of course. And I say that because I'm afraid to see what would happen to the rest of them after Cloud Galactus. @.@)

If anyone was smart enough to walk away before seeing the ending ( after the credits), you made a mistake. :)

This was by far better than Iron Man and Spiderman 2.

As a film critic, I have to say otherwise. The reasons why I prefer those films are because Spider-man and Iron Man are both very character-oriented, but at the same time, they don't have too many characters.

From an entertainment perspective, it's clear that audience members were probably more enthralled by The Avengers, as clearly shown by the Tomoatometers for the three films. However, if you look at critical perspectives, they're about even. Top rated critics, however, have given a bit more praise to Spider-man 2 and Iron Man. For instance, Roger Ebert gave those films four stars while The Avengers got a three from him.

But outside of what the collective majority thinks, I honestly believe that while The Avengers was an excellent film with some great acting, it could have done just a few things better. For instance, the plot, as I mentioned, feels largely like an excuse, and a bit cliche. The connections between the characters weren't as well done as they were in Spider-man 2, and I feel like Iron Man did a spectacular job on the characterization of its star in particular, though it didn't slouch with its other characters. And as I mentioned previously, while The Avengers has a plot that feels a cliche, Iron Man had a rather unique and interesting one, and Spider-man 2 certainly didn't slouch. The action sequences for this film were largely better, though, and a lot of people enjoy having a large roster of big characters for a film. It was an impressive spectacle, but I still say that it's not quite the best of its sub-genre.

If anyone was smart enough to walk away before seeing the ending ( after the credits), you made a mistake. :)

I actually missed the second after credits scene. D: I thought that there would only be one, so I did miss out on the second. I'll probably go to see it again, though, but this time with the 3D glasses off for good measure. They did a pretty good job with the 3D effects, albeit, they weren't as enthralling as Avatar of Transformers: Dark of the Moon. I want to see what it looks like in 2D, though, and I'd rather not spend the extra cash on seeing it in 3D again.
