Honestly has anyone even made the effort to reach out to North American companies in regards to buying the license for DBO? I feel like everyone always pressures NTL to just GIVE their game to a north american company, rather than urge the NA company to actually BUY the game from them.
I'm pretty sure DBO would be a big hit in NA and EU tbh.
if the game was based off the anime i think companies wouldve snatched it up. the fact its based off the manga prolly scared companies away. americans want voice acting and movie characters all of which this game cant have.
would it be successful over here regardless? probably. but publishers dont take risks. esp in a gaming market thats so flooded we are facing another gaming collapse. look up the % of games that break even let alone make a profit now days. its bad. now so many new games come out so often there is no way for ppl to play everything they want let alone fork over the cash. most ppl get their 3-4 new games or less and buy everything ele used later for cheaper. that hurts game sales cuz money spent on used games does not make its way into the publishers hands.
then take look at todays market, gaming isnt just console, pc, handheld. now its those 3, every decent smart phone and tablet taking up arms. the problem with this is its becoming more profitable to make little games on the mobile platform and even if it fails it isnt a big deal.
so when making a game thats f2p (or any type for that matter) you got to think of all that. are ppl gonna sink money into game that they dont have to? if ppl dont cash then the game loses. and anything less than a guarantee profit is hard to get published here. not to mention our licensing laws make things way more difficult when it comes to this kinda of media. thus increasing costs.
