We already had this discussion not to long ago and it turned into a small flame thread. If I see that happening I will close this one instantly.
Personally, I hate that there is so much false information about marijuana. People don't realize that there are very minimal harmful effects and its medical effects are very helpful. Big cooperation's had it made illegal due to hemp being used as paper and launching smear campaigns for it. As for drug cartels, Legalization would only serve to disrupt them in that market and would offer tax incentives to the country if it were sold legally.
Don't misunderstand me though. I am actually strongly against harmful drugs such as cocaine, meth, and heroin. But to place marijuana in the same category as them is foolish and ignorant, as anyone who takes 20 minutes to do their own research on it would know the truth.

Pretty much this.
The powers that be would have you believe that cannabis is a gateway drug. It's only a gateway drug because it's illegal, forcing users of it, even if using for medical purposes, underground. It puts them in a situation where they have to get the cannabis from a guy in a dark alley who will try to push crack on them instead.
I have bipolar. A mental disorder that can be treated with medical cannabis. It may not be some serious condition like cancer or some ****, but some of the side effects for the drugs I have to take are no joke. The government says these drugs are safe. If they had told me that while I was a little kid I probably would have beat the **** out of them(or at least tried). Laying terrified in my bed every night, terrified that I won't wake up thanks to the paranoia, heart palpitations, headaches and wandering pains caused by the drug, for 6 years before I had the medicine changed.
There's a movement in my state to get medical use on the 2014 ballot, here's hoping it passes!
