A new Hero Rises...and its you?

DBO has a number of specific ways to draw you into the game that is designed to specificity appeal to hardcore fans of the franchise, this was a given as the vast majority of fans would be the ones "buying" the game in the first place but sadly DBO forgot one overwhelming gameplay factor that cannot be overcome thanks to the current ongoing language barrier the sad and simple fact that without it we cannot feel like the "hero".

Linguistic issues aside we can plow on through the content more or less blind to the general population while simply nodding and accepting quests from random strangers and randomly depopulating the Forest's and roadsides of local fauna without really knowing the why's and wherefores of what the heck we are doing in terms of individual story or the ongoing plot.

Most DragonBall fans dont even know why the world is populated by Dinosaurs, anthropomorphic animals, ghosts and ghouls, witches and other odd creations when it is supposed to basically be earth even going so far as to be called earth numerous times in the manga rather than the currently established "Dragon World".

The answer is pretty clearly the DragonBalls themselves and it was hinted at that some poorly thought out and frankly dangerous wishes were granted by the eternal dragon long before Bulma Briefs created her Dragon Radar. There is speculation as to what demented dream fulfilment could have caused dinosaurs to spring back into existence or caused household pets be not only gain sentience but be so easily accepted by society at large but i guess that is somewhat beside the point.

Dragon World

The world of DragonBall online is an almost perfect recreation of "Earth" as depicted in DragonBall Z and not as was thought prior to release the Post DragonBall GT world. There are a number of reasons that i wont go into why GT was cut from the franchise in regards to the game but honestly it matters very little given the time scale difference between the anime ending and the games beginning.

The world is without a doubt one of the most accurately rendered environmental locations from any source it has been my pleasure to play within and the simple urge to explore is ridiculously overwhelming.
This is all well and good but limitations to travel speed is significant and notable on foot at early levels, this is negated a little by the gift system that provides a rental "rocket squirrel" jet bike (as used by Yamcha in the original DragonBall anime) and some "scrolls of levitation" to make life a little easier as well as stick ridgedly to the canon transportation limitations established within the anime and manga, after all even Goku had not mastered the "sky dancing" technique until he returned from training with King kai.

Many would and do argue that this is silly as we have seen him levitate before both in and out of combat using the Crane School flight techniques as developed and enhanced by Tien but this would rely on use of a limited resource and highly specialized skill set which in terms of rarity and skill required is once again perfectly recreated by the use of levitation scrolls from the gift boxes and cash shop in game.

There is one interesting alteration to established canon in that rather than dieing or simply settling down we are made aware from various sources that Goku and Vegeta left earth in order to train and fight one last time at the peak of there combined powers. This could mean that they eventually destroyed each other but given Sayin age ranges and given there known power levels and the fact they hadn't really aged physically beyond there early 30's we can presume that the pair could more than likely be alive and significantly more powerful than they were when they left.

The language Barrier & Roleplaying through it

Many newer players still have issues with the lack of an english version of the game but even if you cannot speak a single word to the vast majority of the players you can always play as a foreigner in an odd world.
Once again there are limitations to this but if you feel comfortable playing as an alien eg: a namek and pretending to only speak namekan yet have to get along in the world this does lead to a personal role playing challenge in which you can push yourself away a little from the humans and Majin and contain yourself with the Warrior or Dragon clan lore. You may be speaking english in reality but in the game you are a proud Namek warrior bound to our traditional values and refusing to dilute your tongue with humanity's language. It may make embracing the foreign language barrier a lot easier and after all when the english patch finally does a full release you can pull a Piccolo and simply role play a change of heart.

Some Random Thought's to help with immersion

I quickly touched on anthropomorphic animals a little earlier on and would like to point out some fun bits and pieces of lore that has been wildly accepted but isnt exactly canon primarily due to being ignored by official sources but i thought some could get a kick out of knowing.

-Puar and Oolong are/were "human"

Oolong (pig) and Puar (cat) are not as some have presumed anthro animals but rather students of the West City Shapeshifting academy. The Academy specializes in allowing the students to learn to transform themselves into there "True" form via use of magic and then use that form as a stepping stone to shapeshift further into whatever they want although i for one have to wonder what sort of persons would have his true form revealed as a three foot tall talking pig in a communist Chinese uniform or a flying blue cat with no nose. It should be noted that the only "Real" domestic cat depicted in the anime is Dr Briefs black cat that spends the vast majority of its screen time on his shoulder or being startled by rapid movement.
It is presumed that a Feline form is a very difficult and specialized transformation with only a scant few perfecting it, the only other noted user of this form is Master Korin the 800 year and lord and guardian of Korin Tower. It should also be noted that in the manga Korin was depicted as having blue fur much like Puar.

-Krillin does have a nose

Yes shocking he does actually have a nose of sorts abet a very VERY small one and although it is revealed as a genetic trait he passed on to his daughter Marron it is very clear that the young woman later gained some significant profile definition in later years.
The nose thing was joked on in the original DB anime when Goku and Krillin were waste deep in dung and both were holding there noses before Goku pointed out that Krillin had no nose to which Krillin simply asked "then why can i still smell it?" before gagging.

-Dragon Ball Z was supposed to be a passing of the torch story

Goku was never meant to be the primary protagonist for DB:Z but rather it was supposed to centre around his eldest son Gohan but due to Goku's massive fanbase and popularity he remained at the centre of the story arch right up until Akira Toriyama grew frustrated and left the character dead or incapacitated through the majority of the Cell saga in order to develop Gohan as a character.
Evidence of this alteration of plot from the original ideal is clearly seen in the entirety of the DB:Z anime prior to the Sayin Saga.Despite all efforts to create an intelligent modern everyman protagonist in Gohan it was shown that his popularity remained limited when compared to his father and to a lesser extent Vegeta.
Ironically the childish Goten character massively surpassed both the prince of Sayins and his older brother due to his similarities with his fathers character but still failed to draw attention from Goku's on screen charm and carisma.
All attempts to replace Goku as the shows primary protagonist were dropped soon after despite Gohan being chosen as the next protector of earth by the Kia's and the show continued to focus on Goku as a whole.

-Humans were referred to as "earth sayins"

Humanity's compatibility genetically with Sayins was hinted at during the Freeza saga when it was noted that weak earth Sayins were on Namek. It was rumoured that the term "Sayin" was meerly in reference to our common great ape ancestry but it was later hypothesized that Humans were as alien to earth as Namak's and that humanity as a whole were merely a weaker tailless version of the infamous warrior race much like the Tuffles that had migrated to another planet.
This would explain the genetic compatibility and the fact that Human/sayin hybrids are significantly stronger than full blood sayins at a younger age being able to achieve super sayin status and regrow there tails multiple times in there comparative youth with Gohan regrowing his tail three times compared to Goku's singular regeneration prior to GT and attaining SSJ in his early teens with Gohan and Trunks attaining the power level at pre teen level.

-Goku is a martial arts genius

Goku has more strings to his bow than we thought, Goku can and has managed to replicate every single martial arts skill and ki technique he has never been exposed to. His ability is unprecedented even among his peers to the point that simply listing the ability he has master and improved upon would be an article in and of itself.
Suffused to say some skills he chose not to use due to over complexity in combat or simple comparative uselessness but did hold that information so he could teach others.
DB:GT holds the best example of this in Gokus training of Uub in the use of the candy transformation beam, a skill Goku has never used and Uub would be unaware of but would possibly been covered by Goku as part of that incarnations of Buu's rehabilitation to utilize the full range of the former villains range of skills.

-Mr Popo probably isn't human

Given Mr Popos age and his attachment to Kami as well as his massive range of superhuman skills as well as his knowledge of Namek as well as Kami & Piccolo's previous incarnation as the unnamed namek it is more than likely that Mr Popo is in fact a mutated Namek spawned by the Unnamed Namek prior to his splitting and loss of memory.
After all look at the sons spawned by King Piccolo in DB and look at Mr Popos ears and attire and the Namek connection makes a lot more sense.

Once again I suggest you to write full DBO's review. There isn't any on the internet and full review could increase the popularity of this dying game and give the better view point for the players who are afraid to play because of the language barier. I like your writing style and though I do not agree with everything that you've said, it was still interesting to read. ^^

I am in the process of doing an extended review on DBO as we speak but as would be expected for a full review on such an expansive game it will take a little while to write and edit, this is significantly compounded by the language barrier and i have to admit i was holding out a little for the 50% mark to hit on the english translation patch before i truly vaulted the game for the general gaming public.

I will honever be posting it on this forum before seeking a specific home for the review.

In dbos storyline explaining "the Death of Goku and vegeta . it plainly said that goku and vegeta went to go fight in a distant solar system they fought for a while.. then there was a supernova in that same solar system (I paraphrased a lil) but thats the jist of it, they both were never seen again... Just wanted to make that clear so there wont be a misunderstanding..... wait do u know the storyline of dbo?

Im not sure "death" was the word used in the translation and i was under the impression that they CAUSED the supernova and have not been seen since.

dammit now you have me questioning my somewhat limited translating skills.

no from what I understand It wasnt clear if they caused the supernova or not.. it just said a supernova was seen from earth .. considerin they are so vague on the most important event in dbz/dbo history I would conclude they are leaving some space open for themselves just incase they decide to bring goku or vegeta back

Damn Donte O.O ... even you had me worried for a second ... Knowing those two they wouldn't just die they be fighting and training to defeat Maira but prolly due to the blast they are probably lost in space for time being and are probably serveral wounded and can't make it back yet my guess they are still alive and well but badly hurt still even from prolly when they left earth and that event happen and also Dude man write a review on all the gaming sites O.O
